Books and Magazines News: Amazing Stories is no more

Amazing Stories has ceased publication. The magazine began in 1926, and has published in the written fiction of the Masters. It was reinvented or recently as a genre magazine, including interviews, features, and so on, but also keeping the science-fiction short stories. In the announcement of the end of the magazine (which also included the end of Undefeated), Vic Wertz, Associate Editor of both publications said, "Amazing Stories has bounced back from the dead a few times before, though, and we all hope that somehow the 80th anniversary this year won't permanently mark the end of the road."   Movies News: Oldman in place for Harry Potter 5

According to Dark Horizons, Gary Oldman has finally been signed for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. No word on what the holdup was, but Oldman's agent told HPANA, "I can't put my mind in the place of the producers, but I would've thought that when they read the book, a call to us would've been very high on their list. Obviously, the character of Sirius Black is key."

Movies News: Aqua Teen Hunger Force to come to theaters

If you've never seen Aqua Teen Hunger Force, you probably don't know why I'm sitting here scratching my head. If you have, you're probably stretching your own head. This is a very bizarre 15 minute short that appears as part of the Cartoon Network's Adult Swim block. I was pretty sure that this report on TV Squad was an April Fools hoax, but apparently the reference from the Adult Swim web site was in fact posted March 30, so again, take it with a grain of salt but I think it's legit. What will it be about? From the press release:
"The Aqua Teen Hunger Force Movie Film for Theatres is an action-adventure epic that tackles the mysterious circumstances that brought Meatwad, Frylock and Master Shake together. An immortal piece of exercise equipment threatens the balance of galactic peace, and it is up to the Aqua Teen Hunger Force to run away from it. Complicating matters, the Plutonians team up with the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past for ultimate control of the deadly device."

Um .... yeah.

Movies News: Simpsons film confirmed for 2007 -- maybe

I've been seeing a ton of reports on a feature-length version of The Simpsons, and even some reports that the teaser trailer was attached to Ice Age: The Meltdown, but seeing as how yesterday was April Fools' Day, I'm really not sure what is real and what is not. The most legitimate looking story comes from the BBC, and confirms that the trailer does exist, and that the film will be released in July of 2007. However, that story was also posted on April 1, so I'm a little skeptical. However, I did find this report on the trailer from United Press International, which was posted March 31, so perhaps it is true. (Further note, the story has been confirmed in Hollywood Reporter.)

Movies Superman to return in IMAX 3-D

CountingDown reports that when Superman Returns premieres June 30, in addition to regular 35mm compass and 70 mm showings, you'll have the option to see it in IMAX -- and in IMAX 3-D. Word is that while only about half an hour of the movie will be in 3-D, this is not just the visual effects sequences, but also those with live-action actors, which has never been done in an IMAX 3-D film before. Yours truly saw The Polar Express in IMAX 3-D, and if this is going to become a standard, is really, really sorry there are no more Star Wars movies.

TV Star Wars TV concept revealed

Star Wars producer Rick McCallum told the BBC that the writing team would be meeting soon to work on a Star Wars TV series, to start shooting and airing in 2008. McCallum also said that it would run at least 100 episodes, generally the requirement for syndication.

McCallum revealed that the series would be set in the 20 years between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and would chronicle the life of young Luke Skywalker. He said it was "unlikely" that any of the actors involved in the films would be involved in the television version.

Movies George Lucas declares the end of the blockbuster

Oh, those Oscar parties. The New York Times reports that George Lucas commented last night that he thinks the days of the $200 million picture are over because it's impossible to make that money back in today's market.
"I think it's great that the major Oscar nominations have gone to independent films," Lucas told me, adding that it's no accident that the "small movies" outclassed the spectaculars in this year's Academy Awards. "Is that good for the business? No — it's bad for the business. But moviemaking isn't about business. It's about art!"

Was that a smirk? "In the future, almost everything that gets shown in theaters will be indie movies," Lucas declared. "I predict that by 2025 the average movie will cost only $15 million."
